Stealing from the hotel- a bad idea
It is surprising how many guests continue to steal stuff from hotels simply because they feel that they can get away with it. The truth is that stealing stuff from hotels is never a smart move. There was a time when you could provide false information to the desk and get away with the stuff that you have taken. On the other hand, it will be virtually impossible for you to hide your identity if you have paid for the accommodation using your credit card.
Remember, they invariably give themselves a grace period of 2 to 3 weeks where they can file any charge on your credit card if they deem fit. This is a part and parcel of the standard terms and conditions that no guest ever bothers to read. In such a scenario, a hotel which suspects that you have stolen stuff from them will simply get the cost and the penalty to your credit card bill. You have the option of filing a legal complaint and initiating a dispute.
However, the onus will be upon you to do so. In the past, the onus was up on the hotel to convince you to shell out the money. Today, they will simply take the money away and you will be the person who would have to run behind them demanding the money back. Of course, the negative publicity that you will have to suffer is an added disadvantage. I have seen that two and three-star hotels do not hesitate to initiate such an action even if it results in negative publicity for the hotels.
They operate on small margins and just do not have the option of absorbing such losses. Just as you stay away from red diesel for your standard diesel vehicle because of the risks involved if you get caught, you should stay away from the habit and the tendency of stealing stuff from the hotel you are staying in. It just is not worth the risk.
